Am 24. November 1918, nicht einmal zwei Wochen nach Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges, kamen die ersten Briefmarken aus Estland in Gebrauch - allerdings ohne Zähnung. Diese ersten estnischen Briefmarken mit "Blumenmuster" trugen die Inschrift "Eesti Post" (Estnische Post) und wurden mit der Schere aus dem Bogen geschnitten. Die rötlich orange Briefmarke mit dem schlichten Blumenmuster war ungezähnt und fünf Kopeken wert. Fehldrucke sind gesuchte Sammlerstücke, ebenso wie die fehlerhaften Perforierungen aus Estland. Die seltenste Briefmarken aus Estland ist die 15 K. Briefmarke aus Estland. Bekannt sind lediglich zwei oder drei Umschläge (gestempelt) mit der 15 Kopeken-Marke. Schätzungen vermuten noch etwa 1.000 postfrische Marken weltweit.

Nachdem sich die estnische Post einige Jahrzehnte lang auf drei Dauermarken mit Wappenlöwen beschränkt hatte, erschienen in 1991 neun neue Briefmarken mit dem Wappenlöwen. Eine weitere sehr beliebte Dauermarke wurde mit dem "Löwenzahn" am 14. September 2004 ausgegeben. Zu den bemerkenswerten Sonderausgaben zählt der am 21. Januar 1938 ausgegebene erste estnische Briefmarkenblock zur Wohltätigkeitsorganisation "Caritas". Eine der gesuchtesten und teuersten Ausgaben der estnischen Philatelie ist Zuschlagmarke (+ 20 Kronen) zum Untergang der Fähre "Estonia" in 1994.

Am 3. Oktober 1992 erschien mit "Mare Balticum" einer der schönsten Sätze der estnischen Philatelie. Das Briefmarkenheft der "Seevögel" war eine Gemeinschaftsausgabe der Länder Estland, Litauen, Lettland und Schweden. Die Briefmarken aus Estland sind erschwinglich und auch ohne großes Budget ist eine vollständige Sammlung der wichtigsten Briefmarkenausgaben des Landes ist möglich.
