Seit dem 18. Jahrhundert ist das Vereinigte Königreich Großbritannien ein internationales Sammelgebiet. Der Zusammenschluss aus England, Schottland und Wales setzte seit jeher auf Expansion und eroberte zahlreiche Kolonien. Bereits am 6. Mai 1840 gab Großbritannien als erstes Land der Welt eine selbstklebende Briefmarke aus. Mit diesem Beispiel war der Weg für die ersten Briefmarken in Europa geebnet. Nur wenige Jahrzehnte später fast alle Länder Europas folgen.

Diese ersten Briefmarken aus Großbritannien zeigten das Porträt der 21-jährigen Königin Victoria. Der Wert ist aufgedruckt, jedoch nicht das ausgebende Land - denn noch war man ja ohne Konkurrenz. Die sehr alten Briefmarken aus Großbritannien werden noch immer gehandelt, allerdings liegt die Wertbestimmung oft im sechsstelligen Bereich. Auch hier empfiehlt sich, vor einer Auktion die Echtheit nachweisen zu lassen. Sehr interessant und deutlich günstiger sind die "Penny Reds" des 19. Jahrhunderts. Auch die Münzstempel ab 1939 zur Krönung von König George VI sind bei Sammlern begehrt. Von 1919 bis 1929 wurde Irland vom Königreich Großbritannien unabhängig. Dabei kam es zu Ausgaben, die von der provisorischen irischen Regierung überstempelt wurden.

Die Penny-Briefmarke findet sich manchmal noch auf antiken britischen Ansichtskarten. Statt des erwarteten Pennys ist die Währung auf diesen Marken als "d." aufgedruckt. Die Notation stammt noch aus der Römerzeit und steht für das lateinische "Denarium" oder "Denar". Das findet man beispielsweise auch auf einigen Briefmarken aus Frankreich. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurde der Denar zum Penny, der lateinische Solidus zum Schilling und 240 Pennys zu einem Pfund Sterling. Das Symbol für das Pfund L. war in der Römerzeit die lateinische Abkürzung für "Waage".
