Die Ausgabe der ersten Briefmarke Irlands erfolgte recht spät - mit der Verfassung des Freistaats Irland in 1922. Bis dahin verwendete das Land Briefmarken aus Großbritannien, die etwa mit "Dublin 1862" gestempelt wurden. Erst der irische Unabhängigkeitskrieg von 1919 bis 1921 führte mit dem anglo-irischen Vertrag vom Dezember 1921 zur Schaffung eines autonomen irischen Freistaates. Im Dezember 1937 wurde mit einer weiteren Verfassung die Souveränität des Landes erklärt und die Republik Irland ins Leben gerufen.

Auf irischen Ansichtskarten und Briefen finden sich ungewöhnliche Kombinationen von Briefmarken aus Großbritannien und den unterschiedlichsten irischen Stempeln. Besonders interessant sind die 1922 für die provisorische Regierung und den irischen Freistaat überdruckten Marken, die ursprünglich den britischen König George V zeigen. Entstanden sind invertierte oder doppelte Überdrucke sowie fehlende Briefmarken mit fehlenden Buchstaben. Eine Sammlung dieser Ausgaben von 1922 mit ihren Fehlern, Varianten und der einzigartigen Postgeschichte Irlands könnte eine philatelistische Spezialität sein.

Wenn auch die erste offiziellen Briefmarken aus Irland auf sich warten ließen, so gab es bereits im Jahr 1867 erste Briefmarkenentwürfe. Ein Aufstand gegen die katholischen Briten war geplant und der Entwurf der entworfenen Marke zeigt die irische Harfe sowie die Inschrift "Republic of Ireland". Diese Briefmarkenentwürfe aus Irland sind in verschiedenen Farbtönungen und Papieren bekannt.
