Alben der europäischen Marken sind für den Europäer ein Stück Zeitgeschichte. In allen Ländern sind die Briefmarken der aufregenden europäischen und vor allem deutschen Geschichte beliebt. Mit Farben, Monumenten, markanten Profilen spiegeln sie den Zeitgeist und den besonderen Stil der Epochen wider. Die erste Briefmarke der deutschen Bundesstaatsmarken zum Beispiel, gab das Königreich Bayern aus. Der bayerischen Marke von 1849 folgte nur ein Jahr später die des Königreichs Sachsen. Auch das Haus von Thurn und Taxis, das damals mit der Postbeförderung beauftragt war, brachte eine eigene Briefmarke heraus. Erst mit dem Deutschen Reich wurde in 1871 erste kaiserliche und damit landesweit gültige Briefmarke herausgegeben.

Die Nachwirkungen des Ersten Weltkriegs führten auch in Europa zu zahlreichen Briefmarkenausgaben, die nicht immer koordiniert waren. In dieser Zeit wurde die Briefmarke zum Teil überdruckt oder neue Marken herausgegeben, um etwa im deutschen Reich die Volksabstimmungen des Völkerbundes zu publizieren. Auch die in diesen Jahren erfolgte Gründung der Tschechoslowakei brachte beliebte Serien hervor.

Die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs erschienen Briefmarken sind nach wie vor auch bei internationalen Sammlern sehr beliebt. In vielen Ländern kamen zudem Sonderserien in den Umlauf. Zwischen 1936 und 1950 brachte Frankreich beispielsweise sehr fein stilisierte Luftpostmarken mit Perspektiven auf Paris und andere Städte des Landes heraus. Auf einen langen Frieden hoffend, kamen 1946 in Großbritannien zwei Marken heraus: Diese 2,5 und 3 Pence Marken zeigen Olivenzweige und eine Friedenstaube.
