(Lavoisier’s landmark work) put an end to the phlogiston theory and the surviving remnants of alchemy“ (Carter-Muir). – „Although it does not show any material changes in the text nor any additions, all the errata are here corrected, and the plates are the original ones with Madame Lavoisier’s signature. It is difficult to explain now the reasons why this edition was put out in the same year, but it might be assumed that Lavoisier and Cuchet wanted to counteract the distribution of the books which had been fraudoulously issued by printing an authoritative edition“ (Duveen/Klickstein). – „Nachdem L. bereits 1777 vor der Akad. seine Theorie dargelegt hatte, gab das 1789 von L. herausgegebene Hauptwerk „Traité élémentaire de Chimie“ eine zusammengefaßte Darstellung der antiphlogist. Chemie, mit der die Oxidations- und Reduktionsvorgänge richtig erklärt und die Begriffe Element, Säure, Base und Salz neu definiert wurden. Von ihm stammen die Begriffe ,″Sauerstoff“ und „Radikal“. Das Buch war die Geburtsurkunde der modernen Chemie“ (W. Müller in Lexikon bedeutender Chemiker). – Einbände etwas berieben, Band III (″Nomenclature chimique, ou synonymie ancienne et moderne, pour dervir à l’intelligence des auteurs“) fehlt, nur vereinzelt gering braunfleckig und etwas gebräunt, gutes Exemplar mit allen Kupfertafeln.
